Workplace Chaplaincy works with organisations providing personal pastoral support and a listening ear within companies, public bodies and voluntary agencies. These include:
- Industry and Commerce
- Travel & Transport
- The Emergency Services
- Retail, Hospitality & Leisure
- Agriculture
- Town Centre & Retail Outlets
The Chaplaincy has an experienced senior team who work with a larger number (50+) voluntary Chaplains who offer their time and expertise in their immediate localities.
What we do
- Visit the workplace on a regular basis, as agreed, to provide pastoral care and support, encouragement and a 'listening ear' to all within the organisation.
- Develop and build a relationships i.e. ensuring individuals are fully aware that all conversations are confidential and that the chaplain is independent.
- Communicate effectively – listening, questioning, building a rapport, being able to put self in the 'other person's shoes'.
- Carry out role objectively whilst taking an interest in the organisation and the work being undertaken
Our Standards
- Visit on a regular basis and arranging specific times that can be advertised on appropriate notice boards to staff.
- Maintain regular contact with the appropriate personnel within the receiving organisation e.g. HR/OH Officer. You will be given contact details.
- Engagement with staff is made in an appropriate manner i.e. in a non-intrusive, non-interrupting way - a natural opening rather than invasive;
- Be objective, professional
- Seek advice when uncertain or unsure
- Present self in a professional manner ensuring that appearance and demeanour is acceptable to the workplace.
- Be committed and self-disciplined
- Co-operate with the organisation and any relevant personnel to ensure a high standard of health and safety is achieved and report any item or problem having or potentially having an adverse effect on the health and safety of any other person to the appropriate personnel.
- Wear protective clothing, where appropriate, in line with organisational health and safety procedures and guidelines.
- Report all accidents, of any nature and however caused, where appropriate.
- Do not discriminate in any way i.e. treat all clients equally regardless of race, sex, disability, sexual orientation or religion or belief.
Diversity
Employers are increasingly recognising that their people bring to work all their personal attributes, along with their skills, harnessing these enriches the workplace. In response to legislation, organisations are increasingly encouraging the setting up of staff networks to promote diversity in the workplace.
One of the commonly expressed views is that faith, life and work are inextricably linked. Our approach sees and understands diversity as a richness and WM encourages individuals and organisations to explore the opportunities that this presents by encouraging engagement in a number of ways.
This ought to include faith groups and in particular for us, Christian Work Life Groups. Your group may wish at some stage to seek formal recognition under their employer’s diversity framework. This is a developmental opportunity and Transform Work UK (TWUK) is our partner and can provide help and support.
